The "gaiete" are lining up at the starting positions, some engine-run, some rowing, having removed their engines to drop a bit of weight and gain an edge.
Tension is growing. Awaiting the starting signal.

The race is on. Skills, knowledge, experience are put to the test; catch the wind, cut off the oponent, tighten the turn.

After the turn at the buoy at Vodice, crews are tackling against the wind, sailing a zig-zag pattern, called "buriz" locally. From the spectators' viewpoint, the boats are sailing in all directions.

Things are heating up as the crews are approaching the finish.

Although favourites are in a slight lead, the race is undecided until the very end.

After reching the finish line, the crews must lower and fold the sails quickly before entering the harbour.
